Can Your Pastor Offer Support During A Divorce?
Your Pastor can offer support,
prayer,
encouragement and wise counsel during a
divorce
or a
separation.
Most of them have walked alongside other congregants who have wrestled through marriage breakdowns.
Clergy are generally great listeners. They will
pray
with you and for you. They can also direct you to some scriptures and reading materials that will help you during your time of crisis. They may be aware of
support groups
or recovery groups in your
church
or in other churches in your community that may be beneficial to you.
Most clergy do not have extensive training in counseling nor are many, if any, professional counselors or psychologists. A wise shepherd will encourage you to seek additional counseling if they recognize that your needs are beyond what they can help you with. Your church may be able to offer some financial assistance or sponsorship for some counseling with a
Christian Counselor
if they do not have a counselor on staff.
Your minister can assist you and your spouse in some couple or individual counseling as it pertains to your
marriage
and understanding how to work together as a couple instead of against each other. If you and your spouse have decided to embark on a mediated separation, they may be willing to assist you by mediating the terms and overseeing progress of the
separation.
Regardless of what extent your minister is able to counsel you, they will want to know that you are working through a difficulty in your life so they can be praying for you and be watching for opportunities to come along side you, assist you and encourage you.
