Why Christian Counseling?
Christian Counseling can help you work through issues during your
divorce
and unresolved issues from your past that may have contributed to your divorce. Divorce is a confusing, emotionally charged time. Feelings of sadness, despair, loss, grief, anger and hopelessness are normal given the magnitude of the loss you experience during a divorce. BUT, if those feelings do not begin to diminish over time during your
divorce recovery,
you may be wrestling with depression.
How Do You Know if You Need To Seek Professional Help?
• If you are experiencing persistent trouble sleeping or concentrating • If you are experiencing persistent loss of energy • If you are no longer able to enjoy things you used to enjoy • If you notice changes in eating habits
You are apt to experience some or all of these in the early
stages of divorce
– especially if you were surprised by it. It is the prolonged presence of these issues that demands you seek professional help.
More Serious Signs That You Should Not Ignore!
• You are entertaining thoughts of suicide • You are experiencing a deep depression that will not go away • You are performing repeated self-destructive behavior • You no longer care about yourself or your future
If any of the above signs ring true of you or your children, please seek professional help right away. A Christian perspective is preferable if available because our battle is not against flesh and blood but against the powers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Christian counselors are able to identify and work with the spiritual as well as the emotional and physical factors involved.
If you live in the United States, you can search the AACC database for a counselor in your area. If you live in Canada, you can search PACCC database for a counselor near you. To locate help in the UK, you can search the Association of Christian Counselors.
If Christian help is not available in your area, please do not let that stop you from getting help. You can also access help online at Barnabus Christian Counseling Online. Your
pastor
or even your family physician may also be able refer you to someone who can help you.
Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Rather, it is a sign of strength. None of us have all the answers. Recognizing that and seeking out those who can help you is the smart thing to do both for you and for your children.
